5 Ways to Prevent Ingrown Hairs

Last Updated on December 13, 2021 by

Getting a Brazilian wax is just half the battle for removing unwanted hair and being bikini-ready. With a few simple tips and tricks that you can incorporate into your beauty routine, staying hair-free and smooth can be easier than you think.

1. Exfoliate Before and After

For starters, use a physical exfoliant to scrub the bikini area before coming in for your Brazilian wax. You can use a scrub for the body or even one you have for your face. The goal is to use something that sloughs off the dead skin cells on the surface so that the hairs can push through as easily as they grow back.

A few days after your wax, once the area no longer feels sensitive, make it a habit to exfoliate a few times a week. Exfoliating not only helps hair to grow in the correct direction and push out easily, but it eliminates the dead skin cells that accumulate and block pores, resulting in bumps and ingrown hairs.

2. Moisturize

Our face isn’t the only area that’s important to keep hydrated. The bikini area is just as delicate, especially when routinely waxing. By moisturizing, the skin is less susceptible to irritation and dryness, leading to the accumulation of dead skin cells and clogged pores. Dry skin can also make the hair break at the surface, leaving the hair coarse and difficult to remove the next time you go in for a wax.

An ideal moisturizer for the bikini area is non-greasy and will soften the skin and hair as it grows in, making it easier for the hair to be removed on an ongoing basis. Other moisturizers good for areas that are being waxed are those that have chemical exfoliants such as an AHA. Lactic acid is commonly found in lotions that work by gently exfoliating the skin over time with use.

3. Avoid Tight Clothing

While you don’t necessarily have to avoid tight-fitting clothes altogether, you should opt for loose-fitting bottoms for the first few days after having a wax. Tight clothing causes friction and irritates skin that’s already inflamed, leading to bumps and irritation.

4. Get a Vajacial

Just like you’d get a facial for your face, why wouldn’t you want to treat the skin of your bikini area the same? A vajacial does it all. It treats ingrown hairs, exfoliates deeply to remove dead skin cells, gets rid of bumps while preventing them in the future, and helps with the hyperpigmentation that comes from previous ingrown hairs.

Vajacials are a great follow-up treatment to your Brazilian wax to help deal with side effects of hair removal. It’s recommended to get a vajacial around one week after your wax to help maintain healthy, blemish-free skin.

5. Wax Regularly and On-Time

The biggest mistake when you start getting a Brazilian wax is to not keep it up. Many want to shave in between in an effort to save time or money, but you only make things worse for both your skin and your pocketbook in the long run. When the hair has been shaved, it’s more difficult to remove and leaves the skin more prone to ingrown hairs, leaving you back at square one and scrambling for ways to get healthy, smooth skin.

It’s important when getting a Brazilian wax that you do it every 4–6 weeks, depending on your hair growth. Waxing too soon can break the hairs that aren’t yet long enough to come out. Waxing after too long can be painful and irritate the skin if there’s too much hair.
